All Laser LASIK also known as IntraLASIK or I-Lasik represents a breakthrough in the field of ultrafast laser science. The primary laser utilized in IntraLASIK is the IntraLase Laser, and it is able to generate light pulses as short as one-quadrillionth of a second.
This laser technology has opened new fields of scientific study and provided the basis of femtochemistry research that won the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The use of the IntraLase laser in the field of ophthalmology was developed by a team of physicists, biomedical engineers, and ophthalmologists about ten years ago. The IntraLase laser is the first bladeless laser technology utilized for LASIK and it is far more accurate and safe then the instruments previously used during LASIK surgeries.
This laser uses an infrared beam of light to precisely separate tissue through a process called photodisruption. In this process, the focused laser pulses divide material at the molecular level without the transfer of heat or impact to the surrounding tissue so there is no cutting.
During the first step of an IntraLASIK treatment the IntraLase laser creates a thin protective corneal flap, and the process takes approximately 15 seconds.(see associated graphic)
The surgeon then lifts the flap to allow for treatment by the CustomVue VISX Laser. This second laser reshapes the corneal surface in order to correct a patient's prescription. When treatment is complete, the protective flap is repositioned, and it heals back into place within two minutes.
A prospective, randomized study was conducted to compare IntraLASIK to the traditional bladed LASIK procedure. In this study, more patients achieved 20/20 vision or better when the IntraLASIK approach was utilized.
Is the All Laser LASIK surgery safer than the traditional bladed LASIK?
Bladeless IntraLASIK completely eliminates the use of any surgical blades during the procedure. Therefore, many of the risks involved with the LASIK surgery are now eliminated. Several reports in the medical literature have now demonstrated an increased safety using the IntraLASIK technique. This is due to the computer precision that drives the laser to attain such accurate results.
Utilizing the all Laser LASIK approach causes very little insult to the eye so patients tend to have a very quick visual recovery. Many patients are now driving to their one day appointment, and often seeing 20/20 or better on the first day after surgery.
Are you a good candidate for IntraLASIK?
The most important component of having a successful IntraLASIK procedure is to have a non-biased evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate. This evaluation should be completed by a qualified doctor who has experience managing LASIK patients.
"There are so many factors to evaluate when determining if a patient is a good IntraLASIK candidate. I like to check each factor carefully to make sure the procedure will be safe for my patients and allow them to achieve good results even 30 years down the line," states Dr. Brooker.
At Advantage Family Optical our doctors utilize a specific pre-operative treatment regimen that allows our patients to achieve better results and have a quicker visual recovery after surgery.
What should you expect to pay for IntraLASIK surgery with a qualified doctor?
When a recent consumer survey was conducted consumers, admitted that they were confused about the pricing of laser vision correction surgery; what's more, they were suspicious about advertisements that touted "on sale" LASIK ... Here are a few facts about the IntraLASIK procedure: A customized procedure as advanced as the IntraLASIK can not be done for $500. Often time these prices are for outdated technology and do not include optimal pre-operative or post-operative care.
Your IntraLASIK procedure fees will typically range between $1,800-$2,700 per eye, or on average $5,000 per individual. This price usually includes all of the pre-surgery evaluation and post-surgery follow-up exams for one year. The good news is we offer financing programs that can allow you to have the procedure for as little as $89 per month. It is said you cannot put a price on clear vision, so it is important to have a laser vision correction treatment that is as safe as possible; one that utilizes the latest technologies, that can help you attain the best visual results.
Dr. Brooker has conducted research with the IntraLASIK procedure and trained doctors worldwide on the techniques utilized with this procedure. He has evaluated hundreds of patients who have undergone LASIK and IntraLASIK, and he would love to share his expertise and the gift of clear vision with you. In fact, Dr. Brooker himself underwent the LASIK procedure six years ago and is still seeing better than 20/20.
